September, 2002

Nine months ago I said here that I thought Mr. Bush was not doing too bad a job in the wake of September 11th. I also took the opportunity to admonish those who were saying that to disagree with the sitting president was something like an act of treason. At the time I thought that we would soon see those sentiments dwindling away.

Well as it turns out there is now a law that says disagreeing with the president is something close to an act of treason or domestic terrorism. Now we see that the FBI is being granted numerous powers that they have not had since the days of J. Edgar Hoover.

We also see America swept in a time of economic turmoil and it seems like every day another major company is found to be rampantly corrupt. Where does Mr. Bush stand on this? Why he says that he stands against it, of course. He also says that he is being tired of being questioned over his past involvement in similar corruptions that could practically have been a blue print for the ones we are now seeing. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, for lying to the American people in this way. Shame on you for using the current upheavals in America to seek to insure your continued political prosperity. Shame on you, shame on your administration, and shame on those in congress who we see scrabbling in the dirt with you.

I invite and encourage you to read the piece of writing below this. It is an impassioned indictment of Mr. Bush for everything I have talked about here and more. I also invite you to add your name to the list of people who take issue with the Mr. Bush or any of his actions.

The Declaration of Independence... from Dubya

Creative Loafing BY JOHN SUGG

Dear Mr. Bush: It is quite likely, considering the blank, empty smirk with which you greet the world, that you may not recognize the document I, with humility and not arrogance, update below. The original was the statement of men who staked their lives to affirm our right to live free; and they penned their names in abhorrence of and opposition to a tyrant with whom you share more than a name.

Although the repeated mendacities of your administration are beyond comprehension—far greater by many powers than your predecessor's peccadilloes with Whitewater, White House travel agents or even Monica's semen-stained dress—you earn credit for telling one chilling truth. Shortly after your brother enabled your undermining of our democracy by illegally disenfranchising thousands of Florida voters, followed by the five Republicans on the Supreme Court halting recounts and selecting you president, you made a surprisingly candid jest to congressional leaders, saying:

"If this were a dictatorship, this would be a heck of a lot easier." Laughing at your own humor—a malignant hahaha considering the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have died battling tyranny and totalitarianism—you then quipped: "Just so long as I'm dictator."

The nation should have paid attention.
